What is toxic positivity?

Toxic positivity is a harmful and unhelpful attitude that involves denying, ignoring, or invalidating the difficult emotions of others. It is often expressed through an overly positive attitude and unrealistic expectations, and can lead to feelings of disconnection and alienation. Toxic positivity is rooted in the uncomfortable feeling of being confronted with difficult emotions, and thus involves the dismissal of negative emotions and the offering of empty reassurances rather than genuine empathy. Ultimately, responding to distress with empathy and understanding is far more beneficial for both parties.
